Mid Norfolk Group Profile

Group Controller: G6XRX Slim Knighton

The Mid Norfolk group of Raynet, originally known as the Breckland Raynet group - since it's catchment area coincides with that of the Breckland District Council's local Government area -
the group has played a major rôle in rendering assistance to the various User Services, in providing communications during a long series of harsh winters, overflooding rivers, many Civil Defence exercise simulations, innumerable leisure and pleasure functions - and a number of searches for missing persons - not all of which resulted in satisfactory recoveries.

During the late eighties a long running series of some six meetings a year at the Great Hockham circuit for junior riders of the Diss M/C club provided Breckland Raynet group's members with an ideal platform for message
handling rehearsal, a number of newly licensed members having their first field experience here assisting St John ambulance teams in dealing with the many minor injuries often sustained by the enthusiastic young riders.
Thetford forest is renowned for it's walking facilities, and the photo below shows the Raynet and St John's control team on location at the Lynford Stag picnic site during a long distance walk.

An occasional event of interest also took place at times in part of the battle area, where groups of four took part in running one of the Assault courses used for troop training. An assortment of hurdles, rope walls, fences and water rope swings provided much entertainment, and not a few accidents, which justified the presence of St John's Ambulance units, supported by Raynet communications.

In it's colourful career, the Mid-County group has contributed substantial benefits to the community since it's original conception in the aftermath of the great flood disaster in 1953.©
